I started the Family History Directory in 2011 as a simple way to keep track of the websites I used while researching my own UK ancestors. Over time, it grew into a directory of online family history resources to help other researchers too.
Today the focus is on the United Kingdom, so each page can offer meaningful links rather than many pages with few details. You'll find websites with online records, along with transcribed parish registers, historical directories and other useful resources, all arranged alphabetically by location to make them easy to find.
Every link is checked weekly. If a site has gone offline, moved, or declined in quality, it gets updated or removed. New records are added almost daily as archives digitise more material and new databases come online — so it's worth revisiting pages you've searched before.
Links are only included if they lead somewhere genuinely useful: a searchable database, a transcription, a digitised document, or a reliable resource for the county or record type in question. Aggregator pages, low-quality blog posts, and sites that require registration just to search are generally excluded.
If you know of a resource that should be here, or spot a broken link, I'd love to hear from you — use the contact page.
